WATERFORD — The final meeting of the Waterford Historical Society for 2010 will be Thursday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day. There will be a potluck supper at 6 p.m. at the North Waterford Church, followed by a program honoring veterans of all historical eras. The speaker will be Arthur Wiknik Jr., part-time Waterford resident.

Wiknik has written a book called “Nam Sense: Surviving Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division.” He was one of the first from his unit to safely reach the top of Hamburger Hill during the final assault and he has contributed to a scholastic textbook on the subject.

Wiknik said he writes and speaks “not about heroism and glory, mental breakdowns, haunting flashbacks nor wallowing in self-pity. We were not strung out on drugs and did not enjoy killing.” Rather, he hopes to give listeners a sense of what “the average combat GI endured during this turbulent time in our nation’s history” and about the “level of courage, principal, kindness and friendship” demonstrated by most servicemen.

The dinner and meeting are free and anyone is invited to attend. Also on display will be some artifacts from Waterford in World War II.
