CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. — Elvira “Vera” Bernard, 90, a resident of Emeritus at Colonie Manor, Latham, N.Y., for the past year, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 6, in the care of the staff of Schuyler Ridge Health Care in Clifton Park.
Born in Terricella Segura, Italy, in 1920, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Rosa (DiConstantino) Ventrella. She came to this country in 1923. She and her family settled in Livermore Falls, Maine. She was a graduate of Livermore Falls High School. During World War II, Vera worked as a clerk for International Paper Co.
In April 1946 she married Norman Bernard. The two shared a blessed union prior to his passing in 2005. Before retiring to Laham, N.Y., Vera and her husband had lived in Ticonderoga, N.Y., Cranston, R.I., and Corinth, N.Y.
Elvira was a former member of the Colonie Elks No. 2192 Ladies Auxillary. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and bowling and was a member of the Latham Senior Citizens bowling league. She was also a communicant of St. Ambrose Church.
She is survived by her loving children, Norma (James) Zambardino of Latham, N.Y., Arthur (Thespina) Bernard of Bernardsville, N.J., and Mary (Mark) Haley of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; her cherished grandchildren, James Zambardino, Amy Tonovitz, Alexander Bernard, Jennifer D’Angelo, Michael Haley and Dan Haley; her sister, Ann Sullivan of Middleboro, Mass.; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Edgidio Ventrella; and two sisters, Mary Nemi and Domenica “Minnie” Rea.
