LEWISTON — Lawrence “Larry” David Field, 66, a lifelong resident of Center Minot Hill Road, Minot, passed away Saturday evening at Central Maine Medical Center surrounded by his immediate family.
He was born July 21, 1944, in Lewiston, the son of Everett and Ruth (Dow) Field. Larry attended school in Minot and was a 1963 graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn.
He played the clarinet in the school band during his school years. On July 5, 1980, he married his wife of 30 years, Mary E. Murphy of Leeds. Larry worked at Hillcrest Poultry, NC Rainville in Lewiston, Industrial Welding and Machine in Portland, Mountain Machine Works in Auburn and most recently worked at Drillen True Value Hardware in Lewiston. While he was employed at Drillen Hardware he took great pride in meeting and helping customers. In 1993, he became owner and operator of The Minot Machine Shop (a sharpening service).
He was a CB Radio enthusiast whose handle was the “Tin Man.” This is how he would later meet his wife, “Irish Eyes.” He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, NRA, Lake Thompson Fish and Game and the Androscoggin Fish and Game. Larry was responsible for starting the Minot Neighborhood crime watch.
He loved the Patriots and Red Sox, NASCAR, fishing, hunting, playing poker and going out to dinner. He found great joy in animals and loved his dog, Midnight, and his two cats. He especially loved spending time with family and friends.
Larry was very proud of his only daughter and her accomplishments. He taught his daughter to have a strong work ethic and to always treat people with the utmost care and compassion. He recently expressed that he had lived a full life with no regrets. He will be greatly missed by his family who loved him deeply.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Field of Minot; his daughter, Rebecca and her husband, Eric Gagnon, of Auburn; brothers-in-law, John J. Murphy Jr. and his wife, Jaye, of Leeds, William “Bill” Murphy and his companion, Angela Berry, of Turner, Michael Murphy and his wife, Gerry, of Leeds; stepmother, Barbara Field of Minot; mother-in-law, Dorothy C. Murphy of Leeds; nieces and nephews, Sara and Jeremy Thistle, Heather and Derrek VanDeusen, Sean Murphy, John J. Murphy III and Jeb and Joshua Murphy.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his father-in-law, John J. Murphy Sr.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Central Maine Medical Center, Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice and Marshwood Healthcare facility for making his journey bearable and peaceful.
