One man was hospitalized early Sunday morning after a fire ripped through a one-story home on the north shore of Sabattus Pond in Greene.

The lone occupant of the home at 83 Sanborn Road, whom fire officials believed to be the owner of the structure but would not identify, was taken to a Lewiston hospital, said Greene fire Chief Phil Lavoie.

Lavoie said Sunday that after the Greene firefighters responded, a call for mutual aid went out to five other towns’ companies “because of the fire’s remote location.”

Despite their efforts, the single-story structure was deemed a total loss, according to Lavoie.

“It appeared to be a converted camp,” Lavoie said, “but it’s tough to tell at this time.”

The investigation into the cause of the fire is being handled by the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
