PARIS — Students from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School will be representing Maine and the region as cultural ambassadors when they travel to China in April 2011.

The group will be led by world history teacher Craig Blanchard. Blanchard updated the staff and community on the trip during a news conference Friday at the high school.

“Not only will the students get to take a look at modern China, they will visit historical sites as well,” Blanchard said.

Included in the trip’s itinerary is a 5-mile hike on the Great Wall, a look at the Olympic stadium, a visit to the Terra Cotta Warriors Forbidden City in Beijing, an excursion to the Panda Preserve and a peek at selected manufacturing plants, Blanchard said.

Twelve students, three teachers and one parent will be in the group. Pamela Chodosh, an English teacher, and Lynn Schott, a special education teacher, are the other two teachers going on the trip.

The students participating in the trip include Logan Boucher, Emma DayBranch, Ruby DayBranch, Matt Farnum, Laura Farr, Sam Hatch, Nick Lacasse, Benin Laliberte, Jesse Newcomb, Kyle Rainey, Beryl Shepley and Kayla Turner.

Each student is responsible for generating $3,000 to pay for their trip. A pair of fundraising efforts are under way. Students will participate in the sale of a 30-Day Prize Calendar and the DECA Craft Fair.

Prizes on the calendar have been offered by businesses from Lewiston, Bethel, Norway and Bridgton. Each calendar sells for $10.

The students have been tasked with selling 25 calenders each, for starters, and they will soon be canvassing the area by foot and by phone.

The DECA Craft Fair, offering only handmade items, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at OHCHS on Nov. 20.

Those wishing to donate crafts may contact volunteer organizer Sarah Shepley at 743-0167.
