JAY — Two men injured in an accident Friday at Verso Paper’s Androscoggin Mill have been treated and released from the hospital.

Mill officials are continuing the investigation, Verso Communications Manager Cherilee Budrick said Monday. She couldn’t release the men’s names but said her understanding was that they had been released from the hospital.

Apparently steam escaped through a manhole from an underground sewer system near the mill’s power house. The men, both contractors who had been hired to do maintenance work at the mill, were standing near the manhole and were injured by the steam, she said.

The incident happened during a shift change at 5:30 p.m., she said Friday. One man was transported by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland and the other was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

“We’re looking into it. Safety is important and our record shows that,” Budrick said.
