PARIS — Dennis Boyd was in second grade when he first caught the singing bug.
Wednesday he and other members of the six-man a cappella group Sidecar Heroes will be performing a “sneak preview” CD release concert at 7 p.m. in the Mark S. Eastman Auditorium in Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School on Route 26.
“We made it happen. This is our premiere,” said bass member Dennis Boyd, who is the director of choirs at the local high school. The second-year teacher, originally hailing from Berwick, previously worked at the Noble High School in SAD 60.
The ensemble’s repertoire includes doo-wop, Earth Wind and Fire, Aerosmith and everything in-between. The group joined forces a year and a half ago, but four of its members previously sang and recorded music together as the Maine Steiners, the University of Maine’s celebrated all-male a cappella ensemble.
The new group caught on quickly. In February, The Portland Press Herald named Sidecar Heroes as one of this year’s 10 bands to watch in Maine. Staff Writer Stephanie Bouchard said the group can “wow their audience with vocal acrobatics and harmonies.”
“It’s amazing the sounds the human voice can create,” she wrote of the southern Maine-based group.
“Nothing’s sacred when it comes to a cappella,” Boyd said. “We’ll try anything.”
For this performance only, Boyd said the ticket prices for families will be $15, with $5 tickets for individuals.
“We really try to make it a family-friendly atmosphere. This isn’t a sit quietly concert,” he said of the Nov. 10 event.
“The goal is we want the community to come out (to hear the performance),” he said of the group members, who have all been immersed in the a cappella scene since college. Some members sang with Six Day Week and Fourtnight.
All proceeds from the performance will go to the Tri-M Music Honor Society — an honor society that is devoted to supporting and celebrating students with exceptional skills in school, and those involved in community outreach.
Boyd said there will be a limited number of CDs available for sale after the performance.
The concert is being hosted by the Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter No. 1090 based at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.
