DIXFIELD — Dirigo High School students wanted to know Tuesday how long Theater at Monmouth actors had been acting, how to become a summer intern, and which were their favorite plays.
The question-and-answer period took place after a performance of Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors.”
A troupe of eight professional actors from the Monmouth theater spent most of the day at Dirigo High School, holding workshops on deciphering Shakespeare, improvisational acting, creating scenes, and other acting topics.
Then, the play became the focus as students and teachers crowded into the student center to watch the comedy that involves twin brothers mistaken for each other and all the ensuing antics.
Giggles and laughs erupted from students as one confusion led to another on the stage. In the end, the twins were revealed and the mystery unraveled.
Actors were asked if the married couple on the stage were a couple in real life (no), how long it took to learn their parts (about two weeks), and where their original homes were (Maine and New York City, mostly).
This was the third time Dirigo High School students have hosted Theater at Monmouth productions. In 2007, it was “Romeo and Juliet,” and in 2008, it was “Macbeth.”
Funding for the production comes from a University of Maine at Farmington Partnerships for Success/GEAR UP project grant.
The troupe had performed in York County last week, and was heading north to Aroostook County later this week.
When the actors were asked if they ever get bored performing the same play over and over, the lead actress said no.
“Every audience is different, and we make tiny changes,” Elizabeth Helitzer said.
