LEWISTON — Maurice Cyrille Fillion of Lewiston died Sunday, Nov. 7.
He was born on Nov. 27, 1921, and was the first son of Antoinette and Tom Fillion of Berlin, N.H. Ordained an Oblate priest in 1947, he left the ministry 20 years later, having served 11 years at Saint Paul Center in Augusta. He subsequently married, earned a doctoral degree at Boston University and eventually became an independent management consultant.
After retiring in 1986, he moved to Lewiston with his wife, Madeleine (Custeau Gagne). Though widowed at age 74, after what he described as “18 years of authentic love,” Maurice maintained an undying curiosity and commitment to emotional, intellectual and spiritual growth. He became a registered counselor and published a memoir entitled “PRIEST.” Maurice died peacefully in his home at the age of 88, surrounded by family.
He is survived by a brother, the Rev. Normand Fillion, O.M.I.; a sister, Cecile Cloutier; Madeleine’s three children, Suzanne Tiner, Nancy Breau and Michael Gagne; eight grandchildren, Erik, Scott and Jennifer (Robert) Tiner, Tammy Gagne and Nichole Gagne-Charpentier and Christian, Lauren and Andrea Breau; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Madeleine; his brother, Romeo Fillion; and his sister, Florence Nault.
