FALMOUTH — Verona K. Crafts, formerly of Auburn, and most recently of Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth, passed away peacefully on Nov. 9.

She was born Verona Katherine Fehlau on June 10, 1913, in Cullman, Ala., the ninth of 10 children born to the Rev. R. Theodore Fehlau, a Lutheran pastor and his wife, the former Katherine Metta Stelljes. She spent her early years in Trenton, N.J. Following her father’s death in 1929, Verona and her family relocated to Lewiston to be near her eldest brother, Edgar, then pastor of Grace Lutheran Church.

On March 9, 1943, Verona married Dermont B. Crafts of Lewiston. He predeceased her on Nov. 25, 1988.

Verona always lived life to the fullest, and under her own terms. She faithfully attended Sunday worship at Grace Lutheran Church and loved spending time with friends. She was a member of the Lewiston-Auburn Art Club as well as the local chapter of the Red Hat Society. For 20 years she served on the Board of the Salvation Army in Lewiston and was President of the organization’s Auxiliary arm for two terms.

Central to her life was the love of music. She and her sister Irmela were active in several Lewiston-Auburn area musical organizations including the Philharmonic Club, and over several decades, performed at many music clubs, recitals, weddings and special events. She was actively involved in the Grace Lutheran Church choir for many years.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Dr. Scott Orr, of Amherst, N.H.; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Patty Crafts of Cape Elizabeth; seven grandchildren, Major Geoffrey Crafts of Charleston, S.C., Stephanie Crafts of Cape Elizabeth, Jonathan and wife, Alyssa Crafts, of Portsmouth, N.H., Ken and wife, Nadia Orr, of Gilroy, Calif., Dr. Matthew Orr of Ames, Iowa, and David and Nicholas Orr, of Amherst, N.H.; and two great-grandchildren, Parker and Logan Orr, of Gilroy, Calif.

Verona was predeceased by seven brothers; and two sisters.

The family is grateful for the wonderful care and compassion shown to her by her physician of over two decades, Dr. William M. Lee of Lewiston, and most recently, the staff of Sedgewood Commons.
