LEWISTON — A pair of minor moves highlighted the Maineiacs’ fifth day off from competition Thursday.
The team announced late Thursday that goaltending and strength and conditioning coach Reg Bourcier has resigned.
Bourcier, who lives in Fredericton, New Brunswick, recently started his own business in the hockey world, and was commuting between Fredericton and Lewiston as much as he could to work with the team.
Bourcier and his wife are also starting a family. With all of those commitments, Bourcier felt the time was right to step down.
“Reg was in a situation where he had just started a new business, while also welcoming a new baby into his family, so that was where his mind was focused,” Maineiacs’ GM Roger Shannon said in a team news release.
“A lot of good goaltenders have come through Lewiston, and (Bourcier) shares in the credit for that success,” Maineiacs’ Managing Consultant and Governor Bill Schurman said. “We would like to thank Reg for his hard work and dedication to the organization.”
Schurman and Shannon both also said Thursday that the team will immediately be on the lookout for a replacement for Bourcier.
“It would be ideal to find somebody local that is qualified,” Shannon said.
In another move related to goaltending, but unrelated to Bourcier’s departure, the Maineiacs recalled junior affiliated goalkeeper Antoine Bibeau, ostensibly to back up Nick Champion this weekend as Andrey Makarov continues to recover from a groin injury. Bibeau, a 16-year old draft pick of the Maineiacs, has been recalled for the second time this season. In 12 appearances with Trois-Rivieres, Bibeau has gone 6-3-1 with a 3.02 goals against average and a .906 save percentage.
Lewiston returns to the ice Saturday and Sunday to face off against the cellar-dwelling Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Saturday’s game begins at 7 p.m., with Sunday’s tilt slated for 4 p.m.
