100 years ago,1910

A 14-year-old Lewiston girl screamed, cried and at times acted as old inebriates do when they have the delerium tremens in the women’s cell at the Lewiston police station last night, having been arrested for intoxication. The girl has given the police trouble before and only a few weeks ago was taken to the police station with other girls for parading the streets in boy’s attire.

Early last evening she was on Middle Street with a crowd of men and boys and the police officer who found her believed that the best place for her would be at the lock-up.

50 years ago, 1960

Double the floor selling space and numerous new departments feature the remodeled Fantastic Fair at 120 Center St., Auburn, which throws open its doors at 9 a.m. Thursday to the shopping public. The store originally opened on Nov. 5, 1959, and soon outgrew the original store space, making the additional space a necessity.

25 years ago, 1985

A proposed $60,000 renovation project at the overcrowded Androscoggin Jail in Auburn may not cost the county a penny, according to Commissioner James E. Dougherty.

Dougherty said Thursday night the federal government has offered to pay for renovating the old and unused third floor of the jail if the county agrees to accept federal prisoners occasionally.

Sheriff Ronald B. Gagnon said it has been several years since the county was asked to hold a federal prisoner.
