AUBURN — Gilbert Parker Wood, 90, son of the late John and Sylvie Parker Wood died Nov. 14, at the Hospice House.

He was born Feb. 11, 1920, on the Stetson Farm in Greene. He graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1937, and attended Bates College for one year. He worked for John Sawyer, Clarence Beal and Seward Mower as a teenager and young adult. Later he hired himself and his John Deere tractor out to local farmers and landowners plowing, cultivating and mowing fields.

He went to work as a linotype machinist for the Lewiston Sun Journal in 1944, where he stayed until 1977, shortly after hot-lead linotype machines became obsolete.

In 1977, he became executive secretary of the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial Foundation and remained in that position until his retirement in 1999.

He married Catherine Macdonald on Sept. 22, 1945, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and they made their home for 46 years at the Rackley-Philbrook homestead in Greene. They raised three sons: John, Alan and Mark.

From 2002 Catherine and he had made their home at The Meadows in Greene. Catherine died in 2004 after 59 years of marriage.
