NEW VINEYARD — James C. Hill Sr., 64, of 346 Lewiston Road, Topsham, died unexpectedly, Saturday, Nov. 13, in New Vineyard, at a hunting camp, with two of his many friends, David Bernier and Roy Dickinson. He has enjoyed hunting trips from this camp for the past 39 years.

He was born in Shreveport, La., Nov. 24, 1945, the son of James B. and Amy Clarice Prudhomme Hill. He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School in Shreveport. He joined the U.S. Navy at an early age and served for 20 years, retiring as a chief petty officer. He was a senior naval parachutist for 15 months and a test jumper at El Centro, Calif. He later served as an instructor at the SERE school in Rangeley for seven and a half years. He was a recipient of a Vietnam Service Medal with One Star.

Following his retirement in 1983, he established Hill’s Upholstery in Topsham. He married A. Rose Dostie Karcher in Topsham on April 20, 1995. He had a love of flying and currently was enjoying his Cessna 150 Aircraft. He was a member of American Legion Post 202 in Topsham, a former member of the Brunswick Kiwanis Club and an Eagle Scout.

Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of Topsham; a son, James C. Hill Jr. and his wife, Cherie, of New Baden, Ill.; a daughter, Angela Elwood Baker of Michigan; a stepdaughter, Pamela Karcher and her companion, Randall Flaig, of Topsham; a stepson, Michael Karcher and his wife, Jane, of Auburn; two sisters, the Rev. Anita Hill of Minneapolis, Minn., and Janet Eady; six grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren, including Justin Karcher, who lives with Jim and Rose.

He was predeceased by a sister, Martha.
