AUBURN — A local man spent most of Friday in jail after he allegedly passed a Maine State Police trooper going nearly 100 mph on Route 4 Thursday night.

Joshua Sleeper’s troubles only got worse after he was pulled over. Police said they found a mound of cocaine the size of a golf ball inside the 25-year-old’s SUV. They also said Sleeper was drunk.

After he was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail, Sleeper was doused with a chemical spray after jailers said he became combative.

Sleeper was ultimately charged with operating under the influence, drug trafficking and criminal speed.

According to Maine State Police, the drama began shortly before midnight when Trooper Jeffrey DeGroot was passed on the right by an SUV. According to DeGroot’s radar, that SUV was traveling at 98 mph in a 55 mph zone.

After DeGroot made the stop, the white powder found inside Sleeper’s vehicle tested positive for cocaine, police said.

Although a booking sheet lists Sleeper’s address as 3 Ward St., Augusta, police said he has been living in Auburn. He bailed out of the county jail Friday night.
