Any time is a good time to give thanks for the good things we have in our lives, but most of us don’t think to do it. Fortunately, Thanksgiving Day is set aside for that very purpose.

At the top of my list of things for which I am thankful is my family. We have made it through another year in relatively good health and without any major setbacks.

There have been a few ups and downs just as there are in everyone’s life, and the financial crunch with some family members being laid off has certainly been tough. But all of us have a roof over our heads and none of us are going hungry, though some of us could certainly do with a little less food from time to time.

Even if I had nothing else in my life to be thankful for, the love and closeness of my family is simply enough.

However, I do have a lot of other blessings to give thanks for. I have oil in my oil tank and gas in my gas tank and though neither will last very long I’m thankful that, at least for today I’m warm and I can go whereever I may need to go.

And right now all the appliances in my house are working and my car is running just fine. Though that can all change in a heartbeat and probably will just before Christmas, for today I’m very thankful.

I’m thankful that I am not Mrs. Bernie Madoff. Can you imagine what it must be like to have your husband go to jail for the rest of his life and you lose the unbelievable life of luxury you have been living?

Thinking about her makes me very thankful for the husband I have. He has his faults, boy, I could write a book on them, but he is a good and honest man and for that I am very grateful. Plus he loves me and that’s a really big point in his favor.

I’m thankful that when I get up in the morning my aches and pains will usually work themselves out after a while. If I drop something on the floor first thing in the morning I’m eventually able to pick it up.

I’m really thankful for every kiss and hug I get from my grandsons. They are reaching an age when hugging their grandmother just isn’t cool, but so far they seem content to be a little uncool.

On the occasions when I have to pick the 11 year-old up at school he will still come running with a big smile and a big hug. The 14 year-olds don’t exactly come running, but they still do the hug no matter who of their friends is around.

When I think about what has taken place in my life since last Thanksgiving I realize it has been pretty uneventful. I didn’t win the lottery. I didn’t miraculously stop aging. I didn’t even loose the weight I vowed I would.

I also didn’t have surgery, suffer any broken bones or even get sick other than a minor cold. All is reasonably well with those I love and we will be able to gather once again to feast in celebration of our good fortune.

A lot of little things add up to be enormous blessings and I sincerely hope that all your blessings are many. And I wish for a very Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.
