CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Slick roads and excessive speed caused a single-vehicle accident Wednesday morning on Route 27, Carrabassett Valley Police Chief Scott Nichols said.

Ian Heikkla, 21, of Vassalboro was traveling south just after 8:30 a.m. and had just passed the Campbell Field Road intersection when he drifted into the breakdown lane and lost traction, causing his vehicle to skid sideways at least 300 feet, he said.

The 2002 Dodge Caravan crossed over the northbound lane before rolling over in the northbound ditch.

Heikkla was wearing his seat belt and was not injured, said Nichols, who investigated the accident.

There was snow on the road at the time, he said, and more fell throughout the day.

NorthStar Ambulance and Carrabassett Valley Fire Department members responded to the scene.
