LEWISTON — The B Street Head Start and prekindergarten recently partnered with the Community Resource Team of the Lewiston Police Department and Police Athletic League to help distribute bike helmets to children in need.
With the help of the CTR officers – Tom Murphy, Craig Johnson and Bill Rousseau – and Sergeant Marc Robitaille, the children of Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care may now ride their bikes more safely. When a group discussion with the children revealed that many of them were in need of bike helmets, PAL donated 100 bicycle helmets.
The police officers have spoken to the children on multiple occasions on topics such as bike and pedestrian safety and stranger danger, and have become regular members of the classroom environment. At the recent End of the Year Celebration, Murphy and Johnson were on hand to give out some of the helmets and speak with parents about safety topics.
