JAY — Selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to approve a five-year agreement with ecomaine in Portland to handle the town’s recyclables.

Ecomaine is a nonprofit waste management company owned and operated by 21 municipalities in Southern Maine.

Under the contract, the town will pay up to $15 per ton of recyclables.

Since May, the company has been charging nothing for communities already participating in the program, Select Board Chairman Steve McCourt said.

Residents will put all recyclables in the same container.

The town hasn’t officially started its single sort recycling program. It’s waiting for a new truck to handle recyclables and solid waste, and a compactor for the recyclables.

Selectmen Tim DeMillo and Warren Bryant worked on a committee to develop the no-sort recycling program in town.
