The article about community response to the convictions of James Raymond reports I said that victims of sexual abuse are treated in the same manner as victims of other crimes and that their credibility is always in question (Nov. 21).

I actually said that there are few other crimes in which the behavior, demeanor and credibility of the victims are scrutinized so closely as in sexual abuse and sexual assault cases.

While credibility is always an issue, the credibility of sexual abuse/sexual assault victims is given extra scrutiny since these crimes do not generally happen in front of witnesses. In the case of children, there is often no corroborating evidence since the children rarely tell about the abuse at the time it occurs.

We have made significant progress in the response to disclosures of sexual abuse in this community. The Androscoggin Children’s Advocacy Center provides a safe, child-friendly environment where children can be interviewed by a forensic interviewer and family members receive information and ongoing support. The Sexual Assault Crisis Center provides an advocate to accompany children and families  throughout  the legal system. There is ongoing education teaching children to talk with a trusted adult if they are being abused, and teaching adults about effectively and appropriately responding to disclosures.

Still, we need to remember the courage it takes for a child to tell, particularly when they know their perpetrator is well-liked. We need to honor their courage and do whatever we can to make this community safe for them.
