AUBURN — Ruth B. Lind, 86, of Auburn, died peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 27, at Clover Manor Health Care Facility with her family by her side.
She was born in Turner on March 18, 1924, the daughter of Clarence H. and Stella (Gilbert) Briggs. She attended the one-room schoolhouse on Upper Street. She then graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1941, and Gordon College in Boston in 1947. For two years she taught rural Bible classes in a circuit of seven schools in Piscataquis County.
She was active in the Turner Village Church as a Sunday school teacher, in youth work and the Ladies Circle.
On Oct. 15, 1949, she married the Rev. John Lind of Bernardston, Mass. Following the wedding, they moved to Elizabethtown, N.Y., where he pastored two churches, one in Elizabethtown and one in Moriah, where she assisted him in the ministry. Following these churches he joined the army as a chaplain and was sent to Korea. He was then transferred to Germany where he continued to serve as chaplain. At that time she enjoyed traveling to various countries in western Europe. Returning to the states he was sent to Milwaukee, Wisc., where he was chaplain of a unit attached to a string of NIKE missiles around the city. At that time it was thought that Russia would attack by air and all large cities were being protected.
He died on April 3, 1957, and she returned to Maine for awhile. She later returned to Milwaukee where she was a pastor’s assistant in a Baptist church for 10 years.
Returning to Maine for the past 40 years, she worked taking care of elderly ladies as a “little old lady sitter.”
She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Brown of Auburn; a niece, Connie Mower and her husband, Philip, of Greene; three nephews, Randy Brown and his wife, Linda, of Augusta, James Brown and his wife, Julie, of Turner and William Brown and his wife, Carri, of Scarborough; 14 grand-nieces and nephews; and 13 great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; two infant brothers, Gilbert and Edson; a grandniece, Audrey Call; an adult niece, Sharon Call; and many dear aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff at Clover Manor Health Care Facility and to the staff at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their excellent care and concern.
