LEWISTON — The DownStage at L/A Arts will host two holiday performances during the second week of December.
On Wednesday, Dec. 8, three Lewiston High School musical groups will perform: The Chamber Choir, The Jazz Choir and The Women’s Chorale. On Friday, Dec 10, vocalist Alexis R.D. Handy and keyboardist Courtney Babbidge will perform songs from the Broadway stage.
Both performances will begin at 7 p.m. and will last about an hour and a half, with no intermission.
LHS students, under the direction of Darren Avery, who has taught voice at the high school for a number of years, will perform a variety of seasonal songs in a mix of musical genres. “It’s great to showcase the young people in our community. We have a lot of talent in our schools and I hope to bring more of this type of thing to The DownStage in the future,” said Jim Handy, interim executive director of L/A Arts.
Alexis Handy graduated from the University of Southern Maine, where she majored in musical theater and minored in theater, performing in roles such as Vixen in the premiere production of “Spirit of Reindeer,” Soupy Sue in “Urinetown,” Kate Mullins in “Titanic” and Donna Marie in “Blood Brothers.” Other plays in her theatrical career include “RENT” and “Spamalot” at the Maine State Music Theatre; “Disney’s High School Musical” at the Ogunquit Playhouse; and “The Producers” at Hackamatack Playhouse. She lives in Lewiston, where she works at LHS while pursing an acting career.
