LEWISTON — Bail was set at $5,000 cash for a Farmington man facing a charge of gross sexual assault during an initial appearance Monday in Lewiston District Court.

Andrew McDonald, 30, was arrested Nov. 24 in Farmington on the charge after police investigated incidents involving a 13-year-old girl that occurred “numerous times between July and September in Farmington Falls,” Detective Marc Bowering of Farmington Police Department said.

Judge Rick Lawrence set bail with conditions of no contact with the victim or anyone under age 18 except for supervised visits with his children.

The next court appearance, a status conference, is scheduled for Feb. 25 in Farmington unless a grand jury indicts him before that. No plea was entered.

Defense attorney Richard Charest told the court the incidents were consensual.

Police became involved after a referral from the Department of Human Services. The victim and McDonald know each other,  Bowering said.

The case is still under investigation and information is limited because of the age of the victim, he said.
