NORWAY – The Board of Selectmen has appointed a new member to the Norway-Paris Solid Waste Committee.
Henry Male was appointed unanimously to fill a two-year slot vacated by Scott Westbury, who resigned due to illness. Westbury was appointed to a two-year term on July 1.
Male joins Town Manager David Holt, Vern Maxfield and Dundee Pratt as the Norway representatives on the board.
The appointment was made following a review of three candidates, including Bruce Cook and Eric Grondahl.
In February all seven members of the Norway-Paris Solid Waste Board of Directors were removed by a unanimous vote of selectmen in both towns. The action came after the Solid Waste Committee came under scrutiny for issues including voting to increase the disposal fee for items left at the transfer station that did not come from Norway or Paris from $7 an item to $25.
Selectmen in both towns agreed the directors adopted bylaws that were inconsistent with the interlocal agreement adopted by Paris and Norway.
In June, both towns appointed new members, including Westbury. Cook, a former selectman, and Grondahl applied for the position at that time also, but selectmen said they wanted new faces on the board.
Holt and Paris Town Manager Phil Tarr were appointed to one-year terms to oversee the solid waste operation.
