A recent story headline concerns me: “Icy roads caused three accidents” (Nov. 29). That is hogwash. Icy roads do not cause accidents; persons driving way too fast for road conditions and weather caused those accidents.
And I predict it will get worse. An erroneous headline like that only encourages drivers to not be personally responsible behind the wheel.
It concerns me greatly that too many drivers in Lewiston and Auburn are speeding, on both major and minor streets. It really concerns me that a driver will not be able to stop his vehicle when someone’s little child or pet dashes out into the street, or to stop when another vehicle pulls out of a side street without stopping (which also happens too often). No way can the driver stop his car immediately, and that means the vehicle is not under control. That means another accident, another insurance occurrence, another rise in everyone’s insurance rates.
The only excuse I can think of for this phenomenon of speeding in the city is that we are experiencing a rash of expectant mothers going into labor, or others in the midst of heart attacks or strokes who are being rushed to the hospitals at those speeds.
What’s the solution?
There must be something people can do to reverse this trend and make the streets and neighborhoods safer.
