This is in response to Katie Lisnik’s letter (Nov. 29).

First of all, I believe that the “Help Fix ME” program is working, and some people have put a lot of time into the program to bring it this far. I am not against the program.

What I am against is those states that do not have spay and neuter programs sending their dogs to Maine. The more Maine decreases its animal population, the more other states will ship their animals here, so it is not a separate issue.

Lisnik is the Maine state director of the Humane Society of the United States. She should be in a good position to try to get spay and neuter programs going in states that don’t currently have them. Then those states would not have to ship their animals to Maine.
