AUGUSTA — The new Republican leadership in the Maine State House is cutting back staff costs.

Maine Public Radio reports the new secretary of the Maine Senate and clerk of the Maine House will be taking home smaller paychecks than their predecessors, who earned about $115,000 a year.

Republican Maine Senate President Kevin Raye says those cuts alone will save about $70,000 annually.

The Republicans also want to disband one committee, Labor, but that proposal faces further review.
