LIVERMORE FALLS — Long-time Western Maine businessman, Alfred “Al” Fuller, 74, a resident of Livermore Falls, died Monday, Dec. 6, at his home surrounded by his family following a long battle against lung cancer.

The youngest of five, Al was born in Livermore Falls, July 29, 1936, to Raymond and Hilda (Pike) Fuller. In 1956, Al graduated from Livermore Falls High School and married his high school sweetheart, Judy Crosson Fuller on June 27, 1959 at St. Rose de Lima Church.

After graduating high school, Al worked briefly as a gas station attendant at Chadwick’s Sunoco before moving to Bowen Brother’s Rambler dealership as a salesperson. In 1974, Al purchased the Bowen Brothers franchise and oversaw its transition to AMC and eventually a Jeep dealership.

In 1975, Al started a local waste hauling company, Tri-Town Sanitation, with two business partners. Six years later, Al purchased another local dealership — Bailey Brother’s Ford — one of the oldest Ford dealerships in the state of Maine. Throughout that period, Al was increasingly involved with the automobile industry at a state and regional level.

In 1991, he was named treasurer of the Maine Automobile Dealers Association, moving to vice chairman in 1992 and chairman in 1993.

Al made many contributions to that organization, most notably the creation of an annual golf tournament to benefit Maine’s Dealer Election Action Committee. Al was also an active member of the New England Ford Dealer Association and served six years on their Advertising Council.

In 1998, Al received the Time Magazine “Quality Dealer Award” for the State of Maine. Al proudly sold his dealerships to his oldest daughter, Brenda (Fuller) Brochu, in 2003.

During his retirement, Al and Judy continued their lifelong passion for the outdoors. He was a member of the Maine Rovers camping club and visited 48 states, Mexico, Canada and New Zealand. They were frequently accompanied by their golf clubs on these trips and particularly enjoyed playing locally at Maple Lane. Al also continued his hobby of restoring antique cars and tractors. And never one to be fully “retired,” Al happily spent the last few years driving all over the state for C.H. Stevenson Construction based in Wayne.

Al is survived by a large family, his wife Judy continues to live in Livermore Falls; their children, Steve and Debbie Fuller of Freeport, Doug Fuller of Phoenix, Ariz, Brenda and Jim Brochu of Livermore Falls, Desmond and Meredith Fuller of Columbia, Md., and Dr. Valerie Fuller and Dr. Andreas Stefan of Falmouth; as well as his six beloved grandchildren, Matt, Zack, Abby, Nate, Carly and Mia.

This past fall, his kids and grandkids formed a “Riding with Al” team to ride in this year’s Dempsey Challenge, where they were among the Top 10 fundraisers. He is also survived by his three brothers, Francis Fuller, Melvin Fuller and Norman Fuller; and his sister, Joyce Fuller Richard.
