DIXFIELD — Football games at Harlow Field next fall could be held at night under the lights if residents approve using funds from the Ione Harlow Fund to help pay for them.
That question, along with voter action to bond $250,000 for the installation of a new sewer main under the soon-to-be-replaced Webb River Bridge, are the two issues residents must decide at a special town meeting set for 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, at Ludden Memorial Library.
The local sports boosters club said about $75,000 is needed to install the night lights at the field across from Dirigo High School. The club has proposed using $50,000 from the Ione Harlow Fund, then raise the remaining $25,000 through fundraising projects. Most of the labor would be donated by club and other community members.
The Ione Harlow Fund was established to provide items that benefit the community.
A new sewer main will be needed once the Webb River Bridge is replaced by the Maine Department of Transportation. That is expected next year. The sewer main carries sewage from Dixfield users to the treatment plant in Mexico.
Residents turned down the bond request during the Nov. 2 election. Town Manager Eugene Skibitsky has said that the town has no choice but to fund the new sewer line because the treatment plant is located in neighboring Mexico.
Sewer department users would repay the debt service on the bond.
Town officials have said that neither the new sewer main nor the sports field lighting will be paid through property taxes.
