The protest organized by Lyndon LaRouche in front of post offices across the state (Short takes, Dec. 4) was news to me.

Signs comparing President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and circulating petitions to impeach Obama reveal an ignorance of the history of the Hitler-led Holocaust. It also reveals an irrational hatred and scapegoating which is similar to the hatred and scapegoating of Jews which Hitler inspired. It appears that those who are accusing Obama of being like Hitler are, in fact, behaving in ways sickeningly reminiscent of Hitler.

The editorial mentioned that when petition-gatherers in Brunswick and Lewiston were questioned about actions and motivations, they declined to explain. That leads me to think they are acting from no real conviction other than irrational hatred.

Who is fanning the hatred?

Maybe they are being paid to perform an action they really have no knowledge of?
