BATH — Arthur Everett Litchfield Jr., 77, of Harpswell, passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, at Winship Green Nursing Home.

He was born June 16, 1933, at his home on South Street in Brunswick, son of Arthur Everett Litchfield Sr. and Gladys (Chick) Litchfield. He attended school in Topsham, Bowdoinham, Cundy’s Harbor and Brunswick.

He enlisted in the Army in 1951 and served in Korea and Japan and was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Devens, Mass. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1955 with a Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, a National Defense Service Medal, a United Nations Service Medal and Overseas Bar and a Good Conduct Medal.

On Jan. 22, 1955, he married Dorothy Golding and they raised a son while living in Durham for 44 and a half years, before moving to Harpswell in 2004. Arthur worked in area shoe shops, at Bowdoin College in food service and in 1971 graduated from Culinary Arts School in Lewiston. After 25 years, as head chef at Opportunity Farm for Boys, he retired.

At Opportunity Farm he made 203 dozen donuts by hand for their yearly open house and put on his famous yearly buffet for 150 people and the board of directors. He made all the arrangements and cooked over an open fire on their two week camping vacations each year. Arthur had his own four piece band and played guitar and sang for free at half way houses in the Portland area and for dances at the farm.

When he retired in 1995, he started the Lenten public suppers at St. Charles Church in Brunswick, which raised money for six different area charitable organizations, until 2003 when his health declined.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Robert and his wife, Marcia, of West Burke, Vt.; a sister, Joan White of Brunswick; granddaughter, Danae Rice and her husband, Loren and grandsons, Liam and Caleb Rice of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; and his foster son, Stephen Harris of Durham.
