DEAR SUN SPOTS: I heard that there are programs that take used laptops and recycle them for use in hospitals, etc. However, I have not been able to find a site in this country that does it. Can you e-mail me the information? — Peter Blake, Auburn, burkelyn@roadrunner.com

ANSWER: There are some sites online where you can donate your laptop to charity, including www.computerswithcauses.org and www.recycles.org.

Locally, the only similar program of which Sun Spots is aware is at the Lewiston Regional Technical Center at Lewiston High School, where students fix up old computers and donate them to needy families at Longley Elementary School.

Teacher Crystal Morris said students can upgrade the computers if they run Windows 98 or a newer operating system. Morris said that anything older than a Windows 98 machine is really too old.

To contact Morris, call 795-4144, ext. 2334, or e-mail cmorris@lewistonpublicschools.org.

As for e-mailing Peter, Sun Spots only answers questions in the column. That’s what the newspaper pays her for — hoping you’ll read Sun Spots everyday!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Several years ago there was an article about a museum that had some old 35-mm movie projectors. It could have been in Blue Hill.

Could you find the date this could have been in the Sun Journal? It could have been in the 1980s. Would it be possible to get a copy of this?

Thank you for any help. — Clayton Crockett, Bethel

ANSWER: Sun Spots needs more information to be able to find this story. Although Google has scanned decades of the Sun Journal and its predecessors, the Lewiston Sun and Evening Journal, the search does require knowing a few details.

She did find a possibility for the museum. Could you be thinking of the Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage in Camden? The website says they have old projectors, including those for silent film. Perhaps if you visit http://tinyurl.com/2b5d32n, you will be able to figure out if this is the right museum.

On Friday, Sun Spots published instructions on how to search the Google archive. If you don’t have a computer, your librarian should be able to help you execute a search. Getting a copy of a story will require using library microfiche, as the Google archive does not allow you to print.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a dozen plaques that I would like to donate to a local organization that could refurbish them and award them to their members for their accomplishments. Do you know of such a group? — Mary, Auburn, 783-3890, ninka12@yahoo.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots does not know of any, but she suspects that you will hear from someone who does.
