AUBURN — Henry J. Cormier, 87, of South Main Street, Auburn, died Thursday, Dec. 16, at the Clover Manor in Auburn.

Born in Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada, on July 11, 1923, he was the son of Francois and Genevieve Girouard Cormier. On Oct. 14, 1950, he married the former Louise E. Grondin. His early years brought him to the Maine woods as a lumberjack.

His appreciation for the woods and wood itself eventually led to a lifelong career as a carpenter. He possessed an uncanny ability of creating solutions with the barest of resources.

Upon retirement as a construction foreman for Gerard Construction in Lewiston, he, along with his loving partner and wife, embarked on a quest to see as much of our wonderful country as possible by road. Towing a camper, they managed to see all contingent 48 states plus Alaska.

His interests included fishing, hunting, hockey, Red Sox baseball, clam digging, collecting old tools and blacksmith supplies, fiddlers contests and most of all, family gatherings.

He will be dearly missed by all. A member of St. Louis Church, Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, he is survived by his loving wife of Auburn; three sons, Henry “Hank” D. Cormier of New Gloucester, Raymond P. Cormier and wife, Janet, of Leroy, Ill., and Frank J. Cormier and wife, Deborah, of Eagle River, Alaska; a daughter, Linda I. Ouimette, of Lewiston; a brother, Emile Cormier and wife, Hectorine, of Dieppe, NB, Canada; a sister, Alice Henwood, of Moncton, NB, Canada; thirteen grandchildren, Sarah Cormier, Michelle Duncan, Matthew and Laura Cormier, Melinda Grise, Cherise, Ciara, Tevin, Carlee and Parker Cormier, Whitney Churchley and Brian and Jennifer Ouimette; and ten great-grandchildren.
