This is in response to the letter from Charles Clark, “No nurse in our school,” printed Dec. 18.

I certainly agree with him — schools need a nurse every day that the school is open. A secretary has an overwhelming amount of work and nursing is not part of it.

I am a retired school nurse and saw firsthand how students need a nurse in-house. Treating injuries, fevers, dispensing medication, monitoring health records and immunizations, and just being there for a child who needs tender loving care, is all part of a day’s work for a nurse.

I realize that times are tough and budgets need to be cut, but do not put a child’s well-being in jeopardy. They are way too precious.
