100 years ago,1910

Members of the Thibeault family who reside in one of the rents in the Jacques-Cartier Block at 141 ParkSt. were nearly overcome by coal gas Tuesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Thibeault had gone away and their children were not accustomed to looking after the stove. Miss Rose Eva Thibeault and her sister, Mrs. Lachance and her husband and children were all more or less affected and some of them were made quite ill for the time being.

50 years ago, 1960

A three-story frame hen house and 8,000 broilers owned by Robert Belanger of the Ferry Road, Lewiston, were destroyed by fire yesterday morning after a hot water furnace apparently exploded, setting the boiler room walls ablaze.

Belanger said the broilers were scheduled for delivery Friday at Hillcrest Poultry Co. and estimated his loss at about $40,000.

25 years ago, 1985

While Cabbage Patch Dolls and accessories are still a popular item among toy buyers in the Twin Cities, they’ve apparently taken a back seat to a pitiful, floppy-eared creature called a “Pound Puppy.”

“Everybody’s out of the Pound Puppies,” said Joel Ellis, assistant manager at K-mart Discount Store in Auburn.”It’s the same situation with them that Cabbage Patch toys were in last year.”
