FARMINGTON — Phyllis P. Clendenning, 90, of Farmington, passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, at Sandy River Center for Health Care in Farmington.
She was born Nov. 29, 1920, in Easton, the daughter of Carl W. and Marion (Bartlette) Hanson. She graduated from Vanceboro High School in 1938. On March 6, 1939, she married Owen Clendenning in Milltown; they raised four children in Vanceboro.
Once the children were on their own she decided to put herself through nursing school. Phyllis graduated from St. Joseph’s Nursing School in Bangor at the age of 45. She worked at Eastern Maine Medical Center and Bangor area nursing homes before retiring. After residing in Vanceboro for more than 45 years, they moved to Brewer in 1966 and then to Farmington in 1998. She also enjoyed cooking, knitting, reading, reciting poetry and traveling. Phyllis was active in the community through her children as they grew up and was always there to volunteer.
Phyllis is survived by two daughters, Linda Nelson of Wilton and Sandra LaBrecque and husband, Frank, of Winslow; a son, Paul Clendenning and his wife, Karen, of Glenburn; 15 grandchildren, Joseph, Andrew, Dodie, Debora, Steven, Kathy, Kelly, Robin, Jason, Patrice, Ronald, Claire, Francine, Janelle and Paul; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, Owen (who passed away in 1990); son, Wayne; son-in-law, Barry Nelson; and two brothers, Carl Jr. and Orville.

Arrangements are under the care of Adams~McFarlane Funeral & Cremation Services, 108 Court St., Farmington. Interment will be at a later date in Vanceboro.
