JAY — The town manager suggested a businessman file an abatement to begin the process of looking into whether he is being overcharged for sewer service.

Jody Therrien told selectmen Monday night that he reviewed his sewer bills to figure out why they had increased so dramatically for his car wash.

He said his sewer bill for the business was about $4,500.

“I actually use about $1,400 in water,” he said.

He said he checked other sewer costs in town and found that he was paying more for his car wash and mobile home park than all of the businesses in the Hannaford plaza combined were paying.

Town Manager Ruth Cushman said he had to apply for an abatement. It’s the first step to look into it, she said.

The town raised its rates by $25 per unit for sewer users on July 1, to $315 per unit. A car wash is charged three units per bay. A unit is equivalent to one residence.

The town has been considering for a few years changing the method by which it calculates sewer use to the amount of water used. to make the rate system fairer. However, no decision has been made.
