Charles Darrington of Lewiston has been giving exhibitions of handcuff manipulations and like stunts at Fairfield that are said to rival those of the great Houdini. He has done not only the feat of diving handcuffed and shackled into ice cold water of the river, returning to the surface freed from irons, but also of breaking out of a stout wooden box in 26 minutes.
50 years ago, 1960
Tons of sand were poured onto streets and sidewalks in Lewiston and Auburn yesterday as highway departments centered all efforts toward combatting the treacherous ice conditions left by Wednesday’s storm.
Temperatures continued downward from the freezing mark all day yesterday and turned the slush to frozen ruts and made roads more suitable for skating than driving.
The mercury wended its way down the scale last night into the teens and prospects are for much colder weather today and tomorrow.
25 years ago, 1985
Thomas Caron, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Caron of Lewiston, gained professional experience in television news reporting this fall through the St. Michael’s College internship program.
Caron, a senior journalism major, has worked in the Burlington, Vt., location of WPTZ-TV, Channel 5 of Plattsburgh, N.Y. This fall he was a sports intern, providing video highlights and full stories of college, high school and other sports in Vermont.
