DIXFIELD — When rivals square off on the wrestling mat there is always plenty of action, but the end results remained the same Wednesday.
Mountain Valley utilized its veterans to pull away to a 44-27 victory over Dirigo.
Joe Provencher recorded the clinching match with a major decision over Ryan Lemay at 140 pounds.
Mountain Valley and Dirigo each crushed Madison 63-6 and 69-12, respectively.
Mountain Valley (4-0) is battle-tested, having finished third at the both the Westbrook and McDonald’s Invitational tournaments. The Falcons won eight of the 11 contested matches, including ruling the upper weights with 24 points from Taylor Carey at 171, Josh Allen (189), Christian Durland (215) and Ryan Glover (285).
“We matched up very well in the upper weights,” Mountain Valley coach Gary Dolloff said. “I told them to go out there and look for a pin. Cody (Magoon) looked good, he just needs more time on the mat.”
Dirigo (6-1) had actually taken a 9-0 lead on wins by Thomas Barnett and D.J. Webber. Barnett recorded a standing take-down in overtime for a 13-11 decision over Santos Rodriguez (152). The Falcon wrestler forced the extra secession by earning three near-fall points at the end of regulation. Webber pinned Zach Cross in 58 seconds at 160.
“The kids knew what to expect,” Dirigo coach Doug Gilbert said.
Falcons freshman Jake Thornton pinned Eric Holman at 112.
In a battle, two-time state champion Ryan Burgess of of Mountain Valley earned near-fall points to decision Caleb Hall, 8-3. The Cougar won a state title as a freshman in 2008.
“I work on getting the first takedown,” said Burgess, who is 9-0 at 119. “That’s a big thing, and then I’m confident on top. Then I can slip in my legs and work on tilts.”
Magoon, coming off shoulder injuries, had a 10-2 major decision against Jesse Hutchinson. Josh Thornton (145) decisioned Bryan Blackman.
The Falcons led 27-9 after Carey stuck Nelson Pepin, Allen beat Zach White in an injury default, Durland scissored Alex Snowman, and Glover stuck Jake Weston.
Lemay stuck a Madison opponent in the opening match, then Blackman ducked behind nine seconds into OT for a 3-1win over Kyle Foley.
“I knew I couldn’t muscle him,”Blackman said, who was a state finalist as a freshman in 2008, but an injury sidelined him last season. “So, I used my technique and slid behind him. The move up in weight has been an adjustment, so far.”
The Cougars had seven pins, including Adam Gill (130), Webber, Pepin, White and
215 Jack Brown.
