DIXFIELD — Police Chief Richard Pickett believes the Christmas season is more a time to give than to receive. To enforce that belief, he and the department organized a gift basket for an elderly woman.
“I’ve been working with this person for a while and I got to know her in a different way,” Pickett said. “This person doesn’t have a lot. (This is a way) to show concern and care.”
He and the department gathered nonperishable foods and other household items, small gifts, gift cards and cash from the officers and from employees in several other municipal departments.
“We wanted to make Christmas a little nicer for her,” Pickett said.
He said the department wants to do something similar not just during the Christmas season. He wants members of the community to identify people who are shut-ins or who could use some kind of help.
He wants a list of people who would benefit from being checked on or assisted.
“If anyone knows of a family or person they are concerned about, we’ll add them to our list,” he said.
The department can be contacted at 562-4517.
Pickett and Sgt. Jeff Howe delivered a wicker basket and two boxes of items to the woman Wednesday afternoon. The Town Office staff decorated the basket for Christmas.
“Christmas is about giving and not receiving — to extend help, love, care and concern,” Pickett said.
