Zach DeBlois was the St. Dom’s golf MVP this season, due in part to his team-best scoring average. That average, though, was less than two shots better than the next golfer in line.
“All of the kids on the team, they were all so tightly-bunched together all year,” St. Dom’s coach Kevin Cullen said. “We had seven players make the All-MVC team for that reason.”
At practice, DeBlois was like the rest of his teammates, wondering if he’d even be selected to play in the next match.
“I think we have a team like any other competitive team,” Cullen said. “The players all come to practice, and they all have to compete every day for playing time. We were in a situation where, two kids who would otherwise be able to play one or two for any other school in the MVC, would have to sit out because only five played in a match.”
At the state final, two first-teamers sat out as the rest of the squad competed on a cold, blustery day at Natanis. Instead of sulking, they followed the team’s players around, reporting back to Cullen and cheering on their teammates.
And for the Saints, the scary part is that just two of the team’s top-7 players will graduate in the spring.
“Next year’s senior class is a great class,” Cullen said.
They were great this year as juniors, too, as were the seniors and sophomores.
With so many great golfers from one team from which to choose, the Sun Journal, instead of recognizing just one golfer of the year, instead recognizes the St. Dom’s golf team as this year’s All-Region Team of the Year, for their unselfish approach in making high school golf truly a team sport.
