FARMINGTON — Allen Pomeroy Butterfield (Butter), 74, of Jay passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Chesterville, June 29, 1936, to Nathalie Butterfield Robbins of Chesterville. He grew up in Chesterville and attended Farmington High School. Allen joined the Army, and served from 1955 to 1957 as a corporal with the military police, stationed in Berlin, Germany, and then was released to reserve duty until 1961.
After service to his country, he was employed with the G.H. Bass Shoe Co. in Wilton, and continued to work for several other shoe manufacturers in Maine until he retired. He was a well-known member of the community and was a member of the veterans clubs of Jay for many years.
During his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking in his shop. He supported the Special Olympics by volunteering through the veterans associations. He catered many events for many people over the years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Allen married Violet Newcomb of Wilton and had two children, Victor and Suelene. He later married Doralice Sawyer of Camden, and had three children, Bryce, Barry and Julie.
He is survived by his wife; five children; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two aunts; several cousins; and one niece.
He was predeceased by his mother; four siblings; one grandchild and several aunts and uncles.
