CHESTERVILLE — Fire from a wood stove damaged a sauna on Soper Road on Sunday afternoon, Chesterville fire Chief Robert Hastings said. No one was hurt.

The sauna was built inside another small building behind the home of Doug Rawlings at 13 Soper Road, off Egypt Road, Hastings said. The fire erupted about 3:30 p.m.

The Rawlingses were home at the time, and Hastings said he believed they saw smoke and called.

It was difficult to fight the blaze because the sauna had thick walls with space insulated in between. Firefighters had to cut the walls and remove part of the steel roof on the approximately 12- by 20-foot building, which is about 30 to 40 feet behind the Rawlings home, he said.

The framework of the building was saved, but the inside space will need to be redone and the roof repaired, he said.

Chesterville firefighters were joined by others from Mount Vernon and Vienna, bringing the number to about 25. They were at the scene about 90 minutes.

Members of NorthStar Ambulance stood by.
