The Lewiston Maineiacs’ short version of a Christmas list included help on the power play, better discipline and more wins to pad the team’s position in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League standings.

Santa Claus delivered in spades.

Francis Beauvillier netted a pair of goals, six different players scored — including Etienne Brodeur with his 30th of the year — and Nick Champion came within minutes of a shutout as the Maineiacs hung seven goals on Victoriaville in a 7-1 victory over the Tigres at Colisee Desjardins on Tuesday in the team’s first game back from the league’s mid-season holiday break.

“We had a lot of contributions from a lot of different people; it was a good team effort,” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. “I thought everybody played hard. There’s no doubt we were tired that last week of the first half, and I think everybody going home and getting a little break here. It was a much-needed break.”

Lewiston’s much-maligned power play — the Maineiacs began the night with the 14th-rated power play in the league, woke up Tuesday, hitting for goals three times in the first couple of periods.

“I thought we moved the puck around well on the power play,” Houle said. “We had a lot of chances and a lot of good shots, and we played disciplined. We didn’t retaliate, and they’re the ones who took all the bad penalties.”

Newcomer Bryce Milson, whom the Maineiacs acquired last week in a trade with Acadie-Bathurst, also appeared to fit right into the mix in his first contest, registering an assist and finishing with a plus-1 rating.

“He had a couple chances to score, and he made a great play in the second period on a back-check where he dove and poked the puck away,” Houle said. It was a great effort for the team on his part.”

Another good sign for the Maineiacs was a three-point night for 19-year-old forward Pierre-Olivier Morin. One of the team’s top players coming into the season, Morin got off to a slower start this season than expected, but has begun to find the score sheet a bit more.

“He’s a good player and we know what he can do,” Houle said. “He could break out in the second half.”

Lewiston got out to an early lead on Morin’s 12th of the season, and went ahead by a pair on Beauvillier’s first of the game, his seventh of the year.

Nick Champion stuffed Philip-Michael Devos on a breakaway near the end of the first to keep the game at 2-0.

“He wasn’t tested much, but a save like that, with us leading 2-0, that was huge,” Houle said. “That kept us in front by two and it was big for our momentum.”

Lewiston piled it on in the second, getting goals from Brodeur, Beauvillier and Michael Chaput in building a 5-0 lead. After two, the Maineiacs were outshooting the Tigres 31-11.

Olivier Dame-Malka and Stefan Fournier pushed the Lewiston lead to seven in the third before Phillip Danault broke up Champion’s bid for a shutout with less than four minutes to play.
