NEWRY — Children and adults new to snow sports can try snowshoeing and cross-country skiing for free on Winter Trails Day, Saturday, Jan. 8, at the new Sunday River Outdoor Center.

Nordic ski and snowshoe rentals and trail passes are free that day.

Located on the Sunday River Access Road at the entrance to Sunday River Ski Resort, the center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week.

“Winter Trails Day provides an exciting opportunity for Sunday River to showcase its new Outdoor Center and trail system,” Carol Bourque, Sunday River Outdoor Center manager, said Friday by e-mail.

“We look forward to many people participating since it’s an event anyone can join.”

The 16th annual Winter Trails Day involves almost 100 resorts and Nordic centers nationwide and gets more than 11,000 children and adults on the snow each year, according to the Winter Trails Day website.

The Outdoor Center opened its trails for the first time this season on Monday after more than a foot of new snow fell, resort spokeswoman Darcy Morse stated Friday.

Currently, there are 20 kilometers open for classic cross-country skiing and 30 kilometers open for skate skiing.
