Former University of Maine standout Montell Owens was named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster this week as a special teams player.
Owens, whoe was the first alternate for the AFC last season, led the Jacksonville Jaguars with 18 special team tackles, notching at least one tackle in 12 of the 15 games so far this season.
In 2009, Owens set a Jaguars franchise record with 30 special team tackles, and is one short of the career record with 93 special teams tackles in 77 games.
Owens played for the Black Bears from 2002 to 2005 and helped lead Maine to the 2002 Atlantic-10 championship. He played in 38 career games as a running back, notching 1,038 yards. He was honored with the Black Bears’ Jack Butterfield Outstanding Offensive Player Award after his senior season, in which he led the team with 779 yards rushing.
Owens is one of seven former Black Bears currently on NFL rosters, along with Matt Mulligan and Mike DeVito of the New York Jets, Stephen Cooper of the San Diego Chargers, Jovan Belcher of the Kansas City Chiefs, Brandon McGowan of the New England Patriots and Lofa Tatupu of the Seattle Seahawks.
