Some motorists have a need for speed as the year winds down and state police say they’ll be monitoring the highways over the holidays.
The two drivers named Speeders of the Week by Maine State Police were stopped on the Maine Turnpike last week, both going more than 100 mph.
On Dec. 22, Trooper Bernard Campbell charged 28-year-old Michael Olcott of Buckfield with speeding 117 mph in Litchfield. Police said the trooper first noticed Olcott’s vehicle when he clocked it at 95 mph going through a 55 mph construction zone.
Campbell was charged with criminal speed.
On Dec. 26, a Connecticut driver was arrested for speeding 126 mph along the southern end of the turnpike. Trooper Jerome Carr pulled over 19-year-old Nathan Kempe’s car in Wells. He was also charged with criminal speed.
Maine Department of Public Safety officials say police will be out in force for New Year’s Eve and the weekend looking for impaired drivers.
A total of 42 different police agencies are utilizing $200,000 in federal money for additional patrols through the end of January. The money was distributed by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.
State police received the largest share of that funding, which is paying for overtime for the additional officers to increase patrols around the state.
