LEWISTON — At age 74, Paul Jones is still instructing yoga.

And he’s adding a class.

The Sun Journal profiled Jones in April. One of the oldest certified yoga instructors in the area, he was teaching yoga at SeniorsPlus in Lewiston and two classes at Chill Yoga in Lewiston — Gentle Yoga and Geezers Yoga.

“I want to prove you don’t have to be pencil thin and 18 years old to do it. You can be fat and 73 and bald,” he said at the time.

Now 74, Jones is still offering classes at SeniorsPlus, though he’s suspended those lessons for a couple of months during the winter because his older students don’t like traveling at night. It gets dark early, and the winter days end early.

He is still offering classes at Chill Yoga, which moved to 178 Lisbon St. At the beginning of the year he will start teaching a new class there.

Gentle Chair Yoga

“For people who have knee and hip issues. With this type of yoga they’re going to have all the benefits of traditional yoga as far as enhanced stamina, balance, flexibility, range of motion, increased breathing,” he said. “They’ll benefit from all that.”

As implied, chair yoga can be done from a seated position. Jones tried it at SeniorsPlus and got a good response. In offering it through Chill Yoga, he hopes to expose the technique to a wider audience — both people who aren’t so mobile and those who get around fine but spend a lot of their day sitting.

“This can be done by people sitting in their office, at their desk. You know how it is when you’re humped over at a computer all day — your neck and shoulders ache and your lower back aches. There are some poses you can do right there at your desk and it only takes just a minute,” he said.

Jones isn’t about to slow down.

“I’m feeling fine,” he said. “I’m having a wonderful time.”
