BUCKFIELD — Selectmen on Tuesday set a special town meeting fore Feb. 19 to vote again on an ordinance that would allow residents to get loans to make their homes more energy efficient.
The measure was defeated in November by a vote of 475-300.
Property Assessed Clean Energy is a federally-funded program where residents can get a home energy audit and then apply for a loan to make energy improvements.
State Rep. Terry Hayes, D-Buckfield, told the board and others Tuesday that voters did not have enough information before the November vote. She said many people thought the town would be borrowing the money.
“This program costs the town no money. Residents who choose to have work done to help their homes be more energy efficient are the ones who would borrow, not the town,” she said.
Resident Joyce Hartson said a lot of people voted in November, but only a few would turn out this time.
Hayes said the Maine Green Energy Alliance would see to it that each resident is mailed an invitation to the hearing on the ordinance and the special town meeting where there will be a lot of information given.
Also at the Feb. 19 meeting will be a vote on whether to accept a grant for a generator to keep the town operating in case of a power outage. The grant is for $11,000 and must be matched. Town Manager Glen Holmes said the town’s share could be only $5,000.
Rescue Chief Lisa Buck announced that the unit has reached paramedic level. Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, John Lowell, praised her for the advancement.
The board accepted a revised job description for the public works superintendent, which Selectman Robin Buswell was instrumental in developing. Buswell said he did not intend to do harm to the superintendent but to give more of the paperwork to Holmes.
“I want the superintendent’s job to be a working job, not paperwork,” Buswell said.
The board accepted the resignation of Tony Buckley from the Planning Board giving thanks for his service. It also approved Peter Houghton for the Recreation Committee.
