AUBURN — A Poland man escaped without serious injury after his vehicle struck a street light and rolled over onto its roof in a single-car accident Tuesday evening.
Terry Burnell, 57, was driving south on Turner Street when the accident occurred at 6:06 p.m. He was trapped in his vehicle until Auburn police, fire and emergency services arrived at the scene and were able to remove him from the upside-down Chevrolet Cavalier.
Burnell did not appear to suffer any major injuries, but was taken to St. Mary’s Regional Hospital in Lewiston for evaluation, Auburn police Lt. Anthony Harrington said.
Several witnesses stopped to call 911 and waited with Burnell until rescuers reached the scene.
“I was surprised he was conscious,” a witness, Jennifer Ward, of Pownal, said. Ward stayed by Burnell’s side until emergency services arrived, reassuring him that help was on the way.
“I’m not a first-responder. I only see this stuff on Xbox, not in real life,” Ward said. “I’m just glad he’s OK.”
Turner Street was shut down for about an hour while police worked to free Burnell and remove his vehicle from the road. The city-owned aluminum light pole was knocked over by the force of the accident, and Burnell’s car was rendered undriveable. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, Harrington said.
